Giovanni Maria da Crema. Ricercare primo.
Giovanni Maria da Crema was born in Crema (in Cremona, Italy) before 1520, and died after 1550. The biographical information on this lutenist and composer is scarce and not always plausible. He may have been a member of the sextet of Italian viol players who performed at the court of Henry VIII. His "First book for intablature of the lute" contained 15 ricercares, vocal composition, chansons, and motets by a number of Italian and French composers. His ricercares were memorable for their use of imitation, three to four-part organization and non-inclusion of figuration and embellishments.
