В итоге жители поселка пришли на публичные слушания - единственное официальное мероприятие, на котором власти решили выслушать глас народа. Однако у гимназии № 18, где проходили слушания, томилинцев ждала полиция во главе с начальником ГУВД Люберцы. Большой актовый зал школы не смог вместить всех желающих ( по словам инициативной группы, пришло около тысячи человек), люди стояли в коридорах, еще около ста человек остались на улице, так как сотрудники полиции заблокировали дверь. В результате, на улице перед гимназией образовался стихийный митинг, на котором люди скандировали лозунги против присоединения к Люберцам. В это время в актовом зале общение глава города Люберцы Владимир Ружицкий сначала попытался объяснить собравшимся преимущества укрупнения, однако в пылу завязавшейся дискуссии перешел на личности. Надо сказать, что жители также эмоционально высказывали свое мнение, не пытаясь подбирать слова. В результате детального обсуждения не получилось: большинство высказывали власти все, что думают, а власть показала, что это мнение ей безразлично и публичные слушания проводят исключительно для того, чтобы соблюсти процедуру.

I must say that residents also emotionally expressed their opinions, without trying to choose words. As a result of a detailed discussion, it did not work: the majority expressed to the authorities what they thought, and the authorities showed that they were indifferent to this opinion and were holding public hearings solely in order to comply with the procedure.
