В общем, решил я потестить, что это за зверь, и поставил себе linux mint xfce x64 (13ой сборки, Maya, т.к. они ее собираются суспендить до 17ого года, в отличие от прочих, решил, что она, видимо, зело хороша).
Телепортируемся к моменту, когда у меня на руках был счастливый сиди с нужным дистрибутивом, и я начал ставить сиситему. Локализацию я выбрал русскую, раскладку русскую, логин и пароль ввел английские. И это была моя первая ошибка.
Переключать раскладку нельзя, поэтому ввести английские логин и пароль просто физически невозможно. Интернеты говорят, что там внизу есть панелька, где это можно выбрать - нет никакой панельки.
Уже менее счастливый, переставил ее с английской дефолтной раскладкой. Ура, вошел. Но раскладка на русский не меняется принципиально. Залез в "настройки - клавиатура" - добавил русскую раскладку (legacy). Если в этом окошке ее менять, то меняется, но иначе поменять нельзя.
Никаких "свойств" внизу слева в окне "клавиатура" нет. Если лезть через системные настройки в управление клавиатурой - там совершенно то же окно, опять же, без возможности настроить горячие клавиши для смены раскладки (а чуть менее чем все советы в гугле рекомендуют именно это).
Лезть в etc/default/keyboard не весело, да и быстро не помогло на самом деле.
Совсем отчаявшийся, побившийся со всем этим уже полтора часа как, я стал просто гулять по настрйокам, в надежде на чудо. Залез в "настройки - диспетчер настроек - панель - элементы" и увидел плюсик справа. Жмакнул - вывалилось множество всего, что можно добавить на панель. "Раскладка клавиатуры" там тоже есть =)
Добавил. Ура, теперь переключать между языками (хотя бы для поисков в гугле) можно не через "настройки - клавиатура", а жмакнув мышкой на окошко на панели.
И тут случилось чудо. Если жмакнуть дважды на "раскладка клавиатуры" в меню настройки панели (что, вообще говоря, не очевидно, никаких "свойства" и прочего там нет), или залезть в properties вылезшей на панель иконки (это да, единственный шаг, который одновременно логичен и является верным действием), то там МОЖНО настроить клавиши клавиатуры для смены раскладки. Моему ликованию не было предела.
Но оказалось, что русский (legacy) печатает буквы верно, а вот вместо запятой рисует вопросительный знак. В этом же меню это можно поменять. Я поменял. Сработало - до следующего переключения ру - ен - ру. Сбросилось на legacy.
Так вот, оказалось, что это просто для красоты, на один раз, попробовать, а настраивается оно как раз в "настройки - клавиатура". И тогда уже все пашет ок.

Completely desperate, having struggled with all this for an hour and a half, I just started walking around the settings, hoping for a miracle. Climbed into "settings - settings manager - panel - elements" and saw the plus sign on the right. Zhmaknul - a lot of everything that can be added to the panel fell out. "Keyboard layout" is also there =)
Added. Hurray, now you can switch between languages (at least for searching in Google) not through the "settings - keyboard", but by clicking on the window on the panel with the mouse.
And then a miracle happened. If you double click on the "keyboard layout" in the panel settings menu (which, generally speaking, is not obvious, there are no "properties" and other things there), or if you go into the properties of the icon that has crawled out on the panel (this is yes, the only step that is both logical and is the correct action), there you CAN configure the keyboard keys to change the layout. There was no limit to my exultation.
But it turned out that the Russian (legacy) prints the letters correctly, but instead of a comma it draws a question mark. This can be changed in the same menu. I've changed. It worked - until the next switching ru - en - ru. Dumped on legacy.
So, it turned out that this is just for beauty, for one time, try it, but it is configured just in the "settings - keyboard". And then everything plows approx.
