Первое фото - с гарвардского моста, соединяющего Кембридж и Бостон. Вид прекрасен, но не о том речь. На мосту толпами встречаются бегуны и велосипедисты. А также странные отметки, как на втором фото. Сама снять не догадалась, стырено в сети. Также как и описание истории происхождения отметок. В конце есть ссылка на источник, если кого заинтересует. Привожу слово в слово, больно уж понравилась.
...Как-то раз, подвыпившие студенты решили измерить длину моста своим еще более подвипившим товарищем, тщательно и аккуратно укладывая друга на мост и делая пометки, чтобы избежать погрешностей. Процедура была тщательной, неторопливой и точной. К середине моста единица измерения устала и попыталась устроить бунт. Сотоварищи бунт пресекли, усталого друга подхватили на руки и довели начатое до конца, бережно укладывая утомленное тело собутыльника на мост, отмечая новые вехи и продолжая так до другого берега. К концу моста, уставшие в хлам и извазюканные, как черти полосатые, студиозусы зафиксировали итоговую цифирь. Так появилась условная единица измерения — Смут, в честь Оливера Смута, которым и измеряли Гарвардский мост. Рост Смута 170 см. Один Смут равен 1,7018 метра.
Кстати, на трехсотом Смуте студентов заметила полиция, но не стала препятствовать научным изысканиям, разрешив завершить начатое. В итоге оказалось, что длина моста равна 364,4 Смута и одно ухо (364,4 Smoots plus one ear)! Одно ухо очень умилило, но заставило поверить в тщательность исследования. А происходило все это в октябре 1958 года.
Отметки на мосту ежегодно обновляются силами первокурсников. СтоЯт отметки каждые 10 Смутов, но на середине моста (182,2 Смута) есть отметка «Halfway to Hell» — «Полпути в Ад» и стрелка, указывающая на университет. Есть и отметка в 69 Смутов — «Heaven» — «Рай».
В конце 80-х годов власти города проводили реконструкцию моста, убрав все отметки. После открытия обновленного моста, по настоянию местной полиции все метки были восстановлены на прежних местах. Полицейские сказали, что они привыкли описывать место происшествия, указывая в качестве ориентиров те самые Смуты, к которым все в полиции так привыкли. Без привычных Смутов в протоколах воцарился хаос, парализовавший работу полиции и требование было удовлетворено.
Самое интересное — сам Смут не затерялся в истории. Он стал президентом Американского национального института стандартов, а позже возглавил Международную организацию стандартов! Смуты поддерживаются калькулятором Google, можете проверить…
