У одного крестьянина зацвели белые лилии. Обычно в это время цветы еще не цвели. Крестьянин очень обрадовался такой диковине и решил выгодно продать их. Он знал, что утром мимо их деревни поедет к Будде очень богатый человек и решил предложить ему прекрасные лилии.
Утром, когда он предложил цветы богатому человеку, тот обрадовался, хотя цена и была высока.
Мимо проезжал князь из соседней провинции, он тоже ехал к Будде. Увидав цветы, он воскликнул:
— Подожди, не продавай их, я дам тебе в два раза больше!
С цветами в руках счастливый князь предстал Перед Буддой. Будда посмотрел на него, на цветы и сказал:
— Брось это!
Князь подумал, что нехорошо подавать Будде цветы левой рукой и, переложив их в правую, протянул Будде, чувствуя себя виноватым. Тот засмеялся и сказал:
— Брось это!
И человек должен был выбросить цветы. "Но почему?" — озадаченно подумал он. И когда обе руки были пусты, Будда засмеялся и вновь сказал:
— Брось это!
Теперь уже нечего было бросать, поэтому человек посмотрел по сторонам — что делать ? Ананда сказал:
— Будда вовсе не имел в виду, чтобы ты бросил цветы. Должен быть брошен тот, кто принес цветы. Ничего не произойдет от бросания цветов. Почему бы тебе не бросить того, кто принес цветы?
Человек понял и припал к ногам Будды. Он больше не вернулся в свой дворец.
Его главный министр пришел и сказал ему:
— Что ты делаешь? Даже если ты хочешь отречься, зачем так спешить? Подумай немного. Твоя жена, твои дети, и все царство и твои дела...
Князь ответил:
— Если человек понимает, то это происходит всегда сразу. Если человек хочет обманывать себя, он говорит: "Завтра я решу, я сделаю это, но не сейчас".

“Buddha did not mean at all that you should throw flowers.” The one who brought the flowers must be abandoned. Nothing will happen from throwing flowers. Why don't you leave the one who brought the flowers?
The man understood and fell at the feet of the Buddha. He never returned to his palace.
His chief minister came and told him:
- What are you doing? Even if you want to renounce, why be in such a hurry? Think a little. Your wife, your children, and all the kingdom and your works ...
