"Великий четверг приближает нас к часу Крестных страданий Христа. Это своего рода кульминация Страстей Христовых.
Вспоминаются события Тайной Вечери, страшная ночь в Гефсиманском саду, час суда и предание Христа на смертные муки.
Накануне страшного дня Христос совершает последнюю трапезу со своими учениками. В знак смирения Господь омывает ноги своим ученикам, показывая пример того, как должно им обращаться друг с другом, не превознося себя.
В память об этом моменте евангельской истории в Церкви установлена традиция — чин омовения ног. Он совершается архиереем (епископ, архиепископ, митрополит, патриарх) на богослужении Великого Четверга.
По омовении ног Иисус совершил Пасху и установил Великое Таинство Евхаристии, то есть Господь даровал людям Свои Тело и Кровь. "
