«Во время умной молитвы в схватку вступают три ума: ум святых сил, ум бесовский и ум человека». Ум человека стоит посередине, и у него столько силы самообладания, что если бы и все силы мрака устремились на него, они не могут его поколебать.
Поэтому сказано в Писании: Бог сотворил человека и оставил его в руке произволения его (ср.: Сир. 15: 14). А в день Суда Он потребует у нас отчета. Мы будем говорить: «Я не мог, Господи!». — «Нет, ты не хотел! Я наделил тебя силой». Ибо ни Ангелы не принуждают человека к добру, ни бесы не могут принудить его ко греху. Всего-то и получил сатана власти в раю, когда прельстил Еву, — чтобы чуточку пошатнуть мыслительную силу человека, то есть помыслом подтолкнуть его к тому, чтобы совершить зло, но не принудить его.
Может, мы станем говорить в день Суда: «Господи, диавол привел меня к такой-то женщине!» А диавол может сказать тогда: «Господи, пусть приведет свидетелей! Кто меня видел, чтобы я вел человека за руку?» «Диавол привел меня в кабак», — скажет другой. Тогда диавол ответит: «Господи, пусть покажет мне свидетелей! Видел ли кто-нибудь хоть раз беса, ведущего человека в кабак?» «Господи, диавол привел меня в такое-то место». А диавол может ему возразить: «Господи, он был глуп и самолюбив, любил самого себя и потому дал победить себя страстям. Я подал ему мысль, и он пошел. Святые Силы тоже подавали ему мысль поступить хорошо, но он их не послушал».
Итак, ум человека находится между Святыми Силами и бесовскими полчищами. И как только почувствует, что его искушают бесы слева, он прибегает к Иисусу Христу в молитве, и тогда Святые Силы радуются, и победа на нашей стороне. А если мы станем беседовать с помыслами и услаждаться ими, то все время будем беседовать с диаволом. Поэтому в Патерике даже не упоминается слово «страсть», а говорится: «Такой-то боролся с бесом блуда», или с бесом гнева, или с бесом лености, ибо всякий грех — это бес.
