Мы в самом сердце Хитровки: здесь дядя Гиляй ел вареные яйца и пил водку (единственное, что можно было потреблять без опасений в трактире "Каторга"), водил сюда как на аттракцион желающих знакомых, а они тянули его за рукав: "Выйдем! Выйдем!" Говорят, сильно приукрасил Гиляровский ужасы Хитровки, чтобы продать подороже материал в газеты, но мне приятно думать, что всё правда и злачные места действительно были такими злачными.
???? А из двора дома Ярошенко можно увидеть колокольню и купола церкви Николая Чудотворца в Подкопаях. Подкопаево — одно из древнейших поселений вятичей. Происходит название либо от фамилии Подкопаев, либо от карьера красной глины, куда наведывались за строительным материалом.
???? Не обошлось и без легенд. Так, религиозный писатель Сергей Нилус записывает замечательную историю, как чудом местный купец спасся от разорения. Богатый купец был церковным старостой в храме и каждый день читал акафист Св. Николаю (хвалебно-благодарственное произведение). Но однажды он разорился. Молился Николаю Угоднику, просил о помощи, и однажды приснился ему Святитель со словами: "Я пришел помочь тебе за твою ко мне любовь и веру. На иконе моей, что в вашей церкви, риза золотая и много драгоценных каменьев: сними ризу с каменьями, продай их и начинай опять торговать; а как разживешься, сделай на икону новую ризу, чтоб была точь-в-точь как старая". Смутил этот сон купца благочестивого: — Как же, — говорит, — могу это сделать? Первое — это святотатство, а второе — как снять? Днем народ, а ночью храм заперт.
— А ты, — отвечает ему Святитель, — приди ночью, да под стену, что против моей иконы, и ПОДКОПАЙ, а в подкоп пролезь, да и сними ризу.
Пришлось Николаю Угоднику еще два раза приходить к нему во сне и повторять сказанное, чтобы купец уверовал, наконец. Выполнил купец наказ Святителя и все вышло ровно так, как он предсказывал. Купец вновь встал на ноги и приказал такую же ризу на икону изготовить. С тех пор храм зовётся в народе Николай-Подкопай.

The merchant fulfilled the prelate of the saint and everything turned out exactly as he had predicted. The merchant again rose to his feet and ordered the same garment to be made on the icon.
