Ясно-понятно, что дворянки оооочень редко кормили своих детей грудью. И даже не потому, что не хотели. Это не прилично! Стыд и позор! А если муж одобряет грудное вскармливание, то он в обществе пропащий человек и жену свою хочет сгубить. И вообще, здороваться с ним за руку никто не будет.

Извечный вопрос: что делать? - Нанять кормилицу. Кормилицы - это, как правило, крепостные крестьянки, которые сами недавно родили малыша. Крепкие, дородные крестьянские барышни. В общем, в лучших традициях картин Венецианова.

А теперь к реальность - чужого малыша кормилица кормит в ущерб своему. Не достаточно молока для обоих. И здесь нужно немного включить воображение и представить жизнь женщины, ее чувства, когда она кормит чужого ребёнка в ущерб тому, кого выносила. А ведь детская смертность в 18-19 веке очень высокая!

И ещё момент - между ребёнком и кормилицей возникает тесная связь. Так ведь природой устроено. К родной матери такой привязанности, таких чувств нет. А это и личная трагедия самой матери. Даже Пушкина с его няней вспомним. Много ли мы знаем о его матери?

А картина очень грустная! Кормилица с барскими детьми навещает своего ребенка, оставшегося с бабкой.
