— Чего мы ждем, сошедшись здесь на площади?
— Да, говорят, придут сегодня варвары.
— Так почему бездействие и тишина в сенате?
И что ж сидят сенаторы, не пишут нам законов?
— Да ведь сегодня варвары придут сюда.
Сенаторам не до законов более.
Теперь писать законы станут варвары.
— А император наш зачем, поднявшись рано утром,
У главных городских ворот на троне восседает
В своем уборе царственном и в золотой короне?
— Да ведь сегодня варвары придут сюда.
И император наш готов принять
их предводителя, — он даже приготовил
указ, чтобы тому вручить: указом сим
ему дарует титулы и звания.
— А консулы и преторы зачем из дому вышли
сегодня в шитых золотом, тяжелых багряницах?
Зачем на них запястия все в крупных аметистах
и перстни с изумрудами, сверкающими ярко,
и опираются они на посохи резные,
из золота и серебра, в узорах прихотливых?
— Да ведь сегодня варвары придут сюда,
так роскошью им пыль в глаза пустить хотят.
— А что же наши риторы не вышли, как обычно,
Произносить пространные торжественные речи?
— Да ведь сегодня варвары придут сюда,
а варвары не любят красноречия.
— А отчего вдруг поднялось смятение в народе
и озабоченно у всех враз вытянулись лица,
и улицы и площади стремительно пустеют,
и по домам все разошлись в унынии глубоком?
Уже стемнело — а не видно варваров.
Зато пришли с границы донесения,
что более не существует варваров.
И как теперь нам дальше жить без варваров?
Ведь варвары каким–то были выходом.

“Yes, they say, barbarians will come today.”
“So why inaction and silence in the Senate?”
And why are the senators sitting, not writing us laws?
“Why, barbarians will come here today.”
Senators are no longer up to the laws.
Now barbarians will write laws.
- But why our emperor, rising early in the morning,
At the main city gate on the throne sits
In his royal dress and in a golden crown?
“Why, barbarians will come here today.”
And our emperor is ready to accept
their leader - he even prepared
decree to hand: decree sim
he is bestowed with titles and titles.
- And why did the consuls and praetors leave the house?
today in gold embroidered, heavy scarlet?
Why do they have wrists all in large amethysts?
and rings with emeralds sparkling brightly,
and they rely on carved staves,
of gold and silver, in patterns whimsical?
- Why, barbarians will come here today,
so they want to throw dust in their eyes with luxury.
- And what about our rhetoricians did not come out, as usual,
To make lengthy solemn speeches?
- Why, barbarians will come here today,
and barbarians do not like eloquence.
- And why did people suddenly get upset
and with concern all at once their faces were extended,
and the streets and squares are rapidly empty
and everyone went home in deep despondency?
It was already dark - and the barbarians were not visible.
But they came from the border of the report,
that barbarians no longer exist.
And now how do we continue to live without barbarians?
After all, the barbarians were somehow an outlet.
