Арки, подъезды и сам Толстовский дом запомнились нам по фильмам режиссера Игоря Масленникова. Здесь снимались основные сцены полюбившейся мелодрамы «Зимняя вишня» и сериал о Шерлоке Холмсе, в котором арки и проезды исполняли роль Лондонских улиц. Также здесь проходили съемки кинофильма «Вам и не снилось» и детективов «Бандитский Петербург» и «Рожденная революцией».

В основе мемориала - один из символов северной столицы - скульптуры сфинксов, расположенные напротив друг друга. Одна сторона лица у сфинксов обычная, а другая сторона, обращенная к Неве и Крестам, изъеденная до черепа.
