Читая историю Гражданской войны в Испании за авторством Хью Томаса как-то обидно было дойти до момента гибели генерала Молы. К историческим персонажам, как и к героям романов успеваешь привыкнуть и проникнуться симпатией.
Генерал Мола стоял у истоков заговора военных против левого правительства Народного фронта и был ключевым руководителем мятежа летом 1936 года. При этом, он остался жив, в отличии от некоторых других лидеров этого мятежа. Мола был боевым генералом, штурмовал Мадрид в самом начале войны. Он досадно погиб во время наступления на Бильбао - столицу Страны басков - его самолёт врезался в скалу. Генералиссимус Франко, по общему мнению, испытал облегчение от его гибели, так как потерял конкурента. Ведь даже по отношению к каудильо Мола позволял себе отеческие и наставнические жесты, хотя в правительственной иерархии националистов никаких постов не занимал, ограничиваясь только армией.
И на десерт: Мола изобрёл термин "пятая колонна". Как-то один журналист спросил у Молы, какая из его четырёх колонн, готовящихся к штурму Мадрида, первой возьмёт город. Мола ответил, что это будет пятая колонна из его сторонников внутри города. У коммунистов началась паника. А у совков она продолжается до сих пор.
