Святая Мария Египетская была раскаявшейся блудницей, жившей в 5-м веке. В 12 лет ушла от родителей из египетской деревни в Александрию, где 17 лет жила как блудница, сходясь со своими любовниками как за плату, так и добровольно.
Заметив толпу паломников, направляющихся в Иерусалим на праздник Воздвижения Креста, она с нечистыми намерениями присоединяется к ним, платит своим телом корабельщикам за провоз, а затем продолжает блуд и в самом Иерусалиме.
Когда наступает праздник и она пытается вместе со всеми войти в церковь, невидимая сила "трижды и четырежды" не впускает её. Вразумлённая таким наказанием, она даёт обет впредь жить в чистоте и просит икону Девы Марии быть её поручительницей, после чего беспрепятственно входит и поклоняется кресту, на котором был распят Иисус Христос.
Попросив Деву Марию и впредь вести её, Mария Eгипетская слышит чей-то голос: "Перейди Иордан и обретёшь блаженный покой", - и принимает его как поданный ей знак. Она покупает на милостыню три хлеба и с ними идёт в заиорданскую пустыню. Первые 17 лет её преследуют влекущие воспоминания о прежней жизни, о вине и разгульных песнях.
"Тогда она сказала:
- Поверь мне, отец Зосима, что 17 лет прожила я в этой пустыне, борясь со своими безумными страстями, как с лютыми зверями. Когда я принималась за пищу, то желала мяса и рыбы, которые ела в Египте; мне хотелось выпить любимого мною вина, а здесь не имела и воды; я изнывала от жажды и страшно мучилась. Иногда у меня являлось очень смущавшее меня желание петь блудные песни, к которым я привыкла. Тогда я проливала слёзы, била себя в грудь и вспоминала обеты, данные мною при удалении в пустыню. Иногда я мысленно становилась перед иконою поручительницы моей, Пречистой Богородицы, и с плачем умоляла отогнать от меня мысли, смущавшие мою душу. Когда же довольно я так плакала, крепко ударяя себя в грудь, тогда как - бы свет разливался вокруг меня, и я успокаивалась от волнений. Как признаться мне, отец, в блудных вожделениях, овладевавших мною? Прости, отец. Огонь страсти загорался во мне и опалял меня, понуждая к похоти. Когда на меня находил такой соблазн, то я повергалась на землю и облевалась слезами, представляя себе, что передо мной стоит Сама моя Поручительница, осуждает моё преступление и грозит за него тяжёлыми мучениями. Поверженная на землю, я не вставала день и ночь, пока тот свет не озарял меня и не отгонял смущавшие меня мысли. Тогда я возводила очи к Поручительнице своей, горячо прося помощи моим страданиям в пустыни - и действительно, Она мне давала помощь и руководство в покаянии. Так провела я 17 лет в постоянных мучениях. С тех пор и до сего дня помощница моя Богородица во всём руководит мною".
Затем все соблазны внезапно отступают, и для отшельницы наступает "великая тишина". Между тем сношенный гиматий распадается; Mарию мучат летний жар и зимний холод, от которых ей нечем прикрыть своё нагое тело. Она кормится жёсткими травами пустыни, а позднее, по-видимому, вообще перестаёт нуждаться в пище. В полном уединении, не имея книг и притом не владея грамотой, она приобретает чудесное знание священных текстов.
Стоя на молитве, она поднимается в воздух и повисает в невесомости примерно на полметра от земли. В течение 47 лет она не встречает ни единого человека; затем её видит монах и священник Зосима, который подаёт ей половину своего гиматия покрыть наготу, оказывается свидетелем чудес и выслушивает историю её жизни. Рассказав ему всё, Мария просит Зосиму через год вернуться и причастить её, однако сказала не переходить Иордан, а ждать её на другом берегу. Через год в Великий четверг, взяв Святые Дары Зосима идет на берег Иордана:
"Он увидел, что святая, озаряемая блеском луны, перекрестила крестным знамением реку, спустилась с берега на воду и пошла к нему по воде, как по твёрдой земле. Видя это, удивлённый Зосима хотел ей поклониться, но святая, ещё шествуя по воде, воспротивилась этому и воскликнула:
- Что ты делаешь? Ведь ты священник и несёшь Божественные Тайны!
Старец послушался её слов, а святая, вышедши на берег, попросила у него благословения. Объятый ужасом от дивного ведения, он воскликнул:
- Воистину Бог исполняет Своё обещание уподобить Себе спасающихся по мере сил своих! Слава Тебе, Христу Богу нашему, показавшему мне через рабу Свою, как я ещё далёк от совершенства!
Потом святая попросила прочитать Символ веры и молитву Господню. По окончании молитвы, она причастилась Пречистых и Животворящих Христовых Тайн и по обычаю иноческому поцеловала старца, после чего вздохнула и со слезами воскликнула:
- Ныне отпущаеши рабу Твою, Владыко, по глаголу Твоему с миром, яко видеста очи спасение Твое.
Потом, обратясь к Зосиме, святая сказала:
- Умоляю тебя, отче - не откажи исполнить ещё одно моё желание: теперь иди в свой монастырь, а на следующий год приходи к тому же ручью, где ты прежде беседовал со мной; приходи ради Бога, и снова увидишь меня: так хочет Бог".
Придя в пустыню еще через год в надежде видеть святую, он уже не застал ее в живых. Зосима находит её тело и погребает его с помощью вышедшего из пустыни льва, который своими когтями вырыл яму для погребения тела праведницы.
Скончалась Мария Египетская в 522 году.

St. Mary of Egypt was a repentant harlot living in the 5th century. At age 12, she left her parents from an Egyptian village in Alexandria, where she lived for 17 years as a harlot, converging with her lovers both for a fee and voluntarily.
Noticing the crowd of pilgrims going to Jerusalem on the feast of the Exaltation of the Cross, she joins them with unclean intentions, pays the shipbuilders with her body for transportation, and then continues fornication in Jerusalem itself.
When the holiday comes and she tries to enter the church together with everyone, the invisible force “three and four times” does not let her in. Admonished by such punishment, she vows to continue to live clean and asks the icon of the Virgin Mary to be her surety, after which she freely enters and worships the cross on which Jesus Christ was crucified.
Having asked the Virgin Mary to continue leading her, Mary of Egypt hears someone's voice: “Cross the Jordan and you will find blissful peace,” and accepts it as a sign given to her. She buys three loaves of alms and goes with them to the Jordanian desert. For the first 17 years, she was haunted by enticing memories of her former life, of wine and riotous songs.

- Believe me, father Zosima, that I lived for 17 years in this desert, fighting with my crazy passions, as with fierce beasts. When I was eating, I wanted the meat and fish that I ate in Egypt; I wanted to drink my favorite wine, but here I didn’t have water either; I was thirsty and terribly tormented. Sometimes I had a very embarrassing desire to sing prodigal songs, which I was used to. Then I shed tears, beat myself in the chest and recalled the vows I made when I left for the desert. Sometimes I mentally faced the icon of my surety, the Most Holy Mother of God, and with a cry I begged to drive away from me thoughts that embarrassed my soul. When I cried pretty enough, hitting myself hard in the chest, while the light would spread around me, and I would calm down from the excitement. How can I confess to you, father, in the lascivious lust that has possessed me? Sorry father. A fire of passion lit up in me and scorched me, forcing me to lust. When such a temptation came to me, I fell to the ground and burst into tears, imagining that My Surety herself was standing before me, condemning my crime and threatening him with serious torment. Downed to the ground, I did not get up day and night, until that light illuminated me and drove away the thoughts that embarrassed me. Then I raised my eyes to my Surety, ardently asking for help to my suffering in the desert - and indeed, She gave me help and guidance in repentance. So I spent 17 years in constant anguish. Since then, to this day, my assistant the Virgin has been leading me in everything. "
Then all the temptations suddenly recede, and for the hermit "great silence" sets in. Meanwhile, the battered Hymatius decays; Maria is tormented by summer heat and winter cold, from which she has nothing to cover her naked body with. She feeds on the harsh grass of the desert, and later, apparently, generally ceases to need food. In complete solitude, without books and, moreover, not owning a letter, she gains wonderful knowledge of the sacred texts.
Standing in prayer, she rises into the air and hangs in zero gravity about half a meter from the ground. For 47 years she has not met a single person; then she is seen by the monk and priest Zosima, who gives her half of his gimatia to cover her nudity, witnesses miracles and listens to her life story. Having told him everything, Maria asked Zosima to return and take her in a year later, however, she said not to cross the Jordan, but to wait for her on the other side. A year later, on Maundy Thursday, taking the Holy Gifts of Zosima, he goes to the shore of the Jordan:
“He saw that the saint, illuminated by the brilliance of the moon, crossed the river with the sign of the Cross, went down from the shore into the water and went to him through the water, as if on hard ground. Seeing this, surprised Zosima wanted to bow to her, but the saint, still walking along the water, opposed this and exclaimed:
- What are you doing? After all, you are a priest and carry Divine Secrets!
The old man obeyed her words, and the saint, ashore, asked him for blessings. Overwhelmed by the horror of wondrous knowledge, he exclaimed:
- Truly, God fulfills His promise to liken Himself to those who are saved, as far as His strength! Glory to you, Christ our God, who showed me through his slave how far I am from perfection!
Then the saint asked to read the article of faith and the prayer of the Lord. At the end of the prayer, she partook of the Most Holy and Life-giving Secrets of Christ and, according to the monastic custom, kissed the old man, then she sighed and exclaimed with tears:
- Now let go of Thy servant, Master, according to Thy verb in peace, for Thy eyes may be seen Thy salvation.
Then, turning to Zosima, the saint said:
“I beg you, Father — do not refuse to fulfill yet another of my wishes: now go to your monastery, and the next year come to the same stream where you first spoke with me; come for the sake of God, and you will see me again: God so desires. "
